One from the two formats of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam is General Training. This test assesses the proficiency of English language for the individuals who wish to go abroad in countries where English is used for work, training, or permanent residency purposes. It tests primarily day-to-day language skills instead of academic-oriented knowledge.

Structure of the IELTS General Training Test
The four sections of the test are:

Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)

Four audio recordings:
Two conversations (one in a social context, one in a training/workplace context).
Two monologues (e.g., public announcements or workplace instructions).
40 questions focusing on comprehension.
Reading (60 minutes)

Three sections with various texts:
Section 1: Short texts (notices, advertisements, etc.).
Section 2: Texts related to work/training (e.g., policies, company handbooks).
Section 3: A longer, more complex general interest text.
40 questions assessing understanding of main ideas, details, and opinions.
Writing (60 minutes)

Task 1: Writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) based on a given situation.
Minimum 150 words.
Task 2: Writing an essay presenting an opinion, argument, or discussion.
Minimum 250 words.
Speaking (11–14 minutes)

Face-to-face interview with an examiner:
Part 1: Introduction and general questions about yourself (4-5 minutes).
Part 2: Talking on a particular topic for 1-2 minutes (cue card).
Part 3: Discussion related to the topic from Part 2 (4-5 minutes).
Scoring
The IELTS scoring is on a 9-band scale, where each section has its own band score.
Overall score is therefore the average of the four sections. Usually, a higher band score (generally 6.0-8.0) is required for work or immigration.

IDP IELTS Academic is one out of two versions of the IELTS exam which stands for the International English Language Testing System. It is targeted at people who want to take up higher education or get a professional registration or an academic role in an English speaking environment. It is geared more around the language skills necessary for use in academic and formal contexts.

Four recordings: There are two conversations, for instance, one with two individuals in an everyday situation, and the prominent more towards an academic context.

40 questions testing comprehension regarding main ideas, specifics, and even opinions.

2. Reading (60 minutes)

The texts have an academic style, containing an argument with some figures or graphs or diagrams.

Finding out main ideas and details

Finding out and drawing conclusions regarding the author’s opinion and inference

Finding out and matching titles, finishing patches, and others
