IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a widely accepted English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration. It is jointly managed by Cambridge Assessment English, the British Council, and IDP: IELTS Australia. The test assesses the language ability of non-native English speakers in the four skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking.
IELTS is required for study or work in a country where the primary language is English, such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and others. The test is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to use English in an academic or professional context.
There are two types of IELTS test: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The Academic version is intended for those who want to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and for those seeking professional registration. The General Training version is intended for those who want to migrate to an English-speaking country, or for those who want to train or study at below degree level.
Both versions of the test consist of four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The listening and speaking sections are the same for both tests, but the reading and writing sections are different. The test takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete.
IELTS scores are reported on a nine-band scale, with scores ranging from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user). The scores are reported in whole and half bands, e.g. 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, and so on.

Universities, colleges and other educational institutions in English-speaking countries often require an IELTS score as part of their application process. They may set a minimum IELTS score requirement for admission, which can vary depending on the program or institution. Some universities may also accept other English language tests, such as TOEFL, PTE or C1 Advanced, in place of IELTS.
It’s important to check the specific IELTS requirements for the universities and programs you are interested in applying to. Some universities may require a higher IELTS score for certain programs, such as engineering or medicine, due to the heavy use of technical language in those fields. Additionally, some programs may require a minimum score in each of the four sections of the test (listening, reading, writing, and speaking).
IELTS test takers can take the test as many times as they want. However, most universities and colleges will only consider the highest score achieved. It’s important to prepare well before taking the test in order to achieve the desired score.
